Did You Say ...Underwater?
...that’s the reaction most people give us when they hear "Underwater Hockey" for the first time. Some think we’re joking, but Underwater Hockey actually started back in 1954, and has grown to become an international sport.
In the Gatineau-Ottawa region, underwater hockey has been alive and well for over 15 years. Our Club, has over 50 members (men, women and children) ranging in ages from 5 to over 50 (see the NEMO kids in action).
Skill levels vary too. Some members are just starting out, trying to hold their breath long enough to get to the bottom of the pool and make a play. While others have played for years, and have felt the excitement of representing Canada in international competitions.
In 2010, four (4) of our members will compete at the World Underwater Hockey Competitions in Colombia.
We’re really excited! June 2010 marked the beginning of a whole new evolution to Underwater Hockey in the Gatineau-Ottawa region. That’s when we began our new aquatic partnership with the City of Gatineau in their new world-class Sports Centre (shown above).
This will not only give us much improved playing facilities, but the City of Gatineau’s support allows us to now offer programs for adult beginners, women, juniors (youth 11 to 17) and NEMO Kids (5 to 10, see the video).

There’s a Level of Play to Fit You
Our programs are usually three (3) months long, and begin in January, April or September. Different programs do have different levels of play.
So whether you are an adult beginner, a recreational player or a competitive player, you will be able to find a level of play that suits you.
We also have different levels of play for kids. Whether your child is a 5 year old and has just started to swim, or a teenager who loves to try out different sports, there is a spot for them.
Our programs are open to men, women, boys and girls.
New Members Can Play In Tournaments?
Within the Underwater Hockey community, tournaments are held all over the world. The Gatineau-Ottawa Underwater Hockey (GO-UWH) usually participates in two or three of the regional tournaments each year.
Held in Quebec City, Montreal, Guelph and London each tournament usually offers competitions at both the advanced and intermediate levels, giving new players an opportunity to play competitively.
Win or lose, the tournaments are always fun!
...and there’s after-game activities too!
Aside from our normal programs and tournaments, members often get together for a variety of social events. But whether its a back yard barbeque, a movie night at a members home, or a weekend at someone’s cottage, there are always a lot of stories, fun and of course the requiste beer and wine.
